SEO for home service businesses
Ranking is not the point. Being the firm a homeowner rings at 7am with water coming through the ceiling is the point. We build local SEO around the searches that carry intent, urgency and margin.
- No lock-in contracts
- Month to month after the first 90 days
- You own every account and asset
- Reported in booked jobs, not impressions
In short
How does SEO work for a home service business?
Local SEO for a trade business is won mainly through the Google Business Profile, review volume and recency, and one properly built page for each service and service area. Google states that local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. Of those three, prominence is the one a business can move quickly, and reviews are the fastest lever inside it.
“Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and prominence. … There is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.” — Google Business Profile Help
This is the whole reason local SEO is worth doing and the whole reason nobody can guarantee you a position. Relevance and prominence are earned. Distance is fixed. Anyone selling you a guaranteed ranking is selling you something Google says does not exist.
The three searches that matter
Almost every enquiry a home service business receives comes from one of three search shapes, and they need entirely different treatment.
Emergency. “Emergency plumber near me”, “boiler not working”, “burst pipe”. High intent, low patience, decided in under two minutes and almost always from the map pack. Winning these is a Google Business Profile job first and a website job second.
Planned. “Bathroom fitters in Leeds”, “flat roof replacement cost”, “heat pump installer”. Researched over days or weeks across several tabs. Won with service pages that answer the real question, honest pricing guidance and proof you have done it before.
Comparison. “Best roofers in Manchester”, “[competitor] reviews”. The homeowner has a shortlist and you are on it or you are not. Won on reviews, on photographs of actual jobs, and on how quickly your site loads on a phone in a car park.
Most agencies write one set of pages and hope. We map your keywords to those three shapes and build different pages, different calls to action and different Google Business Profile behaviour for each.
What is included
Every SEO engagement covers all of the following. There is no bronze, silver and gold.
- Technical foundation. Core Web Vitals, mobile rendering, crawlability, indexation, internal linking, HTTPS and redirects. Fixed, not just reported.
- Google Business Profile. Categories, services, service areas, products, opening hours, photographs, posts, and the Q&A section almost nobody uses. This is the single highest-return asset a local trade owns.
- Local SEO and the map pack. Citation consistency across the directories that matter in your country, review generation strategy, and proximity-aware service-area pages that are genuinely different from one another.
- Service pages. One properly built page per service you actually want more of, targeting the searches your customers really type rather than the industry jargon you use internally.
- Service-area pages. Real pages for the towns you cover, with real local detail. Not two hundred templated pages with the place name swapped, which Google has been penalising for years.
- Content that answers cost questions. “How much does a new boiler cost” gets searched far more than any brand name in your sector. Answering it honestly wins the trust and the traffic.
- Schema markup. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Review structured data so search engines and AI assistants can read your business properly.
- Answer engine optimisation. The same work aimed at ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, which increasingly answer “who should I call” before anyone reaches a blue link.
- Rank and enquiry tracking. Monthly reporting on positions, map pack visibility, organic enquiries and cost per organic enquiry.
Why SEO is worth doing when ads are faster
Because ads stop the moment you stop paying, and because the click costs are brutal in this sector. Ubersuggest currently puts the cost per click for “plumber marketing” at roughly $55 and “HVAC marketing agency” at $57 in the United States. The homeowner-facing terms your business bids on carry the same pressure.
An organic position and a well-optimised Google Business Profile keep producing enquiries at no marginal cost per click. The right answer for almost every home service business is both: ads to pay the bills this quarter, SEO to lower your blended cost per lead over the next two years.

SEO questions
How long does SEO take?
Expect map pack movement from around month three and meaningful organic enquiry volume between months six and nine. A brand new domain takes longer. Any agency quoting page one in 30 days is selling you something else.
Do you guarantee rankings?
No, and neither can anyone else honestly, because nobody controls Google's index. What we do commit to is the work being done, reported and visible to you, and to telling you plainly if a market is too competitive to win at your budget.
Can you rank me in towns I do not have an address in?
Partly. The map pack is heavily weighted to physical proximity, so ranking in a town twenty miles away is genuinely hard. Organic service-area pages can rank there and often do. We will tell you which of your target towns are realistic before you pay us anything.
What about AI search?
It matters already. AI assistants pull from structured data, review signals and clearly written service content, which is largely the same work as good SEO done properly. We build for both and report on AI Overview visibility where it is measurable.
Why reviews decide who gets the call
Reviews are the fastest way to move Google's prominence factor, and they decide the click once you rank.
